Eco Shopping – How to Do Your Part

No Comments 06 September 2010

When it comes to going green, one of the best places to start is with eco shopping tips. These will help the environment, and can also help your health by making you aware of the general issues surrounding going green.

1) Reusable Bags

The first rule of eco shopping is to make use of reusable, cloth bags – which are now sold at many grocery stores. However, you can re-use old shopping bags, or you can even make your own from old materials.

2) Think About Where You Shop

Try to shop at shores that sell local produce, or a locally owned business. This helps to reduce the miles that have been travelled by the food, helping to reduce the impact it will have on the environment. You could also choose stores that sell organic produce which is thought to be healthier since it doesn’t't contain chemical pesticides.

3) Think About What You’re Buying

When it comes to green shopping, you’ll need to think about what you’re actually paying for. Does this mean you’re paying for packaging that’s just going to end up being thrown away at the end of everything? Try to avoid products that have excessive packaging, or that have been processed.

4) Plan Your Meals

When you plan your meals you can dramatically reduce the waste of your home. Only buy what these meals require and nothing more. This is a great way to help you save money as well as helping you to prevent wasting any food.

It might take some practice, but keeping these eco shopping tips in mind whenever you go out will dramatically reduce your carbon emissions.

Toxic Pesticides: Learn How to Avoid Them and Use Natural Alternatives

No Comments 25 August 2010

When it comes to your garden, you probably want to do what you can to make it natural. However, one of the hardest parts can be the avoidance of toxic pesticides. The good news is that there are safe and healthy natural alternatives that can work just as well.

Make Your Plants Undesirable to Pests

Many toxic pesticides are designed to kill pests, so try making a natural alternative that can deter these pests from your plants to begin with. Use one gallon of hot water, and mix it with six cloves of garlic, hot peppers, minced onion and soap. Leave this to sit for a few days, and then put it into a spray bottle. When you apply this to your plants regularly the smell will keep away any harmful pests, but you must reapply it whenever it gets washed off.

Killing Insects

There still may be instances when you need to kill the insects, and the good news is that this can be done without the use of toxic pesticides. Mix a small amount of dish soap and canola oil in water and spray it on your plants. This will smother the insect. However, when killing insects also try to remember that many bug are beneficial to your garden as a whole, so only spray when you absolutely need to.

Fungal Infections

Sometimes the problems with your plants will step from fungal infections, so take steps to prevent this from occurring in the first place, or from spreading to the rest of your plants. Mix baking soda with water and spray this on your plants – this will stop the disease from spreading.

Unfortunately this does not work on mildew, so mix water with milk and spray this on your plants twice weekly. This will help with mildew as well as other fungal infections.

As you can see, avoiding toxic pesticides doesn’t really require a lot of effort, but it’s a great way to keep you and your family healthy!

Tips for Going Green: What You Need to Know About Teflon

No Comments 16 July 2010

When it comes to tips for going green it’s important to try and understand the role that everything you own has in that process. One of the items many of us use is teflon – more specifically, teflon pans. However, many pet birds have been known to die from fumes released from this non-stick cookware. This is due to the many chemicals it contains. So does this also mean Teflon is unsuitable for humans, and that the chemicals can leech onto food?

About Teflon

The chemical most people talk about in the making of Teflon is Perfluorooctanoic acid, or PFOA. Manufacturers claim that the PFOA used in manufacturer is not there in the finished product, and that it is safe if used at low temperatures. However, studies have shown that there are a number of chemicals released at the temperature of the average home stove.

PFOA does not break down, according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (epa.gov), and is potentially carcinogenic.

Tips for Going Green and Finding Alternatives to Teflon

Some of the safer alternatives include:

  • Stainless Steel: This is a combination of a number of methods, and is generally considered safe as long as it isn’t dented or damaged. If it does get damaged then metallic components can leach into foods.
  • Cast Iron: When this is properly seasoned it is safe, and when iron leaches into food it is healthy.
  • Aluminum: This metal has been implicated in Alzheimer’s disease inconclusively. It is generally high acid foods that will cause metal to leach into the food. You can try anodized aluminum for a healthier alternative.
  • Ceramic/ Enamelware: This is iron cookware that has been coated with enamel.
  • Copper: Copper can leach into foods, so try copperware lined with tin or stainless steel for a safer alternative.

When it comes to following tips for going green with your cookware, it may take a little research but you can usually find an option that fits your needs and budget.

Choosing An Eco Friendly Product For Your Baby

Facts & Tips

Choosing An Eco Friendly Product For Your Baby

No Comments 04 July 2010

When it comes to eco friendly baby products, knowing if it’s an eco friendly product can be difficult. There are so many body care products labelled as good for our baby, but the truth is that babies’ skin is very think and sensitive. Even if a product is safe for adults, it may not be safe for your baby. Often, eco friendly and healthy go hand in hand when it comes to choosing a baby product.

1) Look Outside the Labels

The FDA does not require that personal care products be labelled with all the ingredients, and companies are not required to test the safety of the ingredients they use. You might see ingredients such as parabens, sodium laureth/lauryl sulfate, and pthalates – which are all implicated in problems such as skin irritation and disruption to hormones.

Labels don’t even show some of the worst offenders, including by-products, such as 1,4-Dioxane, a potential carcinogen and component of sodium laureth sulfate. So remember – when looking for an eco friednly product, do not automatically trust labels that say ‘natural’ or ‘mild’.

2) Avoid Perfume

Many products include fragrance which usually has bad implications for chemical ingredients. Avoid fragranced products for your baby.

3) Research

The good news is there are a number of databases online that can help you research and choose a safe eco friendly product for your baby.

4) Choose Organic

If you are concerned about chemicals then think about going organic – or even making baby products from scratch. In fact, simple combinations can work well – such as olive oil as a mild moisturizer for your baby’s skin.

Make Your 2010 Resolution Simple – Learn About Going Green!

No Comments 04 June 2010

Hello and happy new year! Green Health Expert has been taking a break over the holidays, but now we’re back with regular posts about going green and staying healthy. Firstly, I wanted to suggest that you factor ‘going green’ into your new year’s resolutions. The title of this post says to learn about going green, but it all depends on what you’re comfortable with. Making just one change will make a huge difference.

Don’t Overwhelm Yourself

When you first get started with going green it can be easy to get overwhelmed. After all, there is all sorts of advice flying at you about every single area of life – the food you eat, the clothes you wear, the way you travel, questions on whether you need to do everything that you do, and so on.

In an ideal world we’d all be carbon-neutral, generating our own renewable energy and eating food we’ve grown from scratch. But the fact is that we are used to a certain way of life, and it’s near impossible to change it all in one go.

This is why I recommend you choose a few things to change and stick to them. Try to change everything and you’ll ultimately fail.
